Elections 2007
(Borrowed image from www.eleksiyon-2007.com)As the whole country makes up its mind tomorrow, I can only hope for better leadership and a brighter future for everyone. Honestly, I think its hopeless but I go to the polling places every election season and cast my hopeless vote anyway.
I always tell my friends, what if they only allowed taxpayers to vote? I mean, only people within a certain income bracket, like people who make at least P10,000 a month or higher, to have the right of suffrage. I always wondered if this would be a viable way of ridding ourselves of the usual election problems of vote-buying and flying voters.
Forgive me for my ignorance, I’m no lawyer so I’m a bit of a simpleton regarding the rule of law. I do know that suffrage is a right that everyone is entitled to, but this is being taken advantage by unscrupulous politicians. Poor people will readily accept P200 for their vote, but working people who legitimately pay their taxes will not allow themselves to be bribed for their vote. Thought it may not be true for everyone, but Maslow’s hierarchy of needs dictates otherwise. Without the fulfillment of the lower level needs such as food and shelter, no one can expect a person to have the conscience or the “morality” to vote for the logical choice. Enough said.

Arpee, your entry reminds me of Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal. I understand why you seem to be starting to get cynical about the whole political situation in the Philippines. By the way, did you vote?
