The mystery that is Ms. Polly

3 November, 2007 (18:07) | Uncategorized | Tags: , , , | By: Arpee

“Let them eat cake,” as French Queen Marie Antoinette once said. This is the advice I followed that lead me to Shell Magallanes, hunting for a box of Ms. Polly’s famous chocolate cake. I’ve alway wondered how good Ms. Polly’s is because a lot of bloggers and friends have been telling me to try it. I wondered, cake from a gas station? You’d be puzzled too. So off I ran and went over there to finally put an end to this big mystery. And I wasn’t disappointed.

How lucky was I when I learned that I was holding the second to the last box of Ms. Polly’s. A blink later, a lady was in line behind me at the cash register holding on so tightly to the last box. That’s how fast these cakes sell, way faster than hotcakes.

Upon getting home, I open the box to see the cake which I realized had already begun melting. The texture was better than the average Goldilocks or Red Ribbon cake. The knife doesn’t bump off the surface, nor does the entire surface offer much resistance to the blunt slicer. Inside, the cake is moist and melts in your mouth.

A box is P380.00 (US$8.45) and is large enough for a group of six people with large appetites. I personally think it’s a good gift idea for a birthday, graduation or welcome home party. Compared to its famous counterparts, Ms. Polly’s is definitely a runaway winner considering the taste and quality at its price. Some of you may be bothered by the sweetness, as Noreen argues that she still prefers the Conti’s chocolate cake. But then, cake was meant to be sweet.

Go ahead and sink your teeth into a Ms. Polly’s chocolate cake. I bet you’d just be as happy as I was.
