Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Minda Cruz has been representing the Philippine government in Singapore since 2008. Indeed she has achievements that make any Pinoy proud. I was lucky enough to have been a guest at the Ambassador’s Residence at the posh District 10 also known as Holland Village in Singapore.

Here she shared with me some tips on what Filipinos should do when trying to find work in Singapore.

Top 5 things to remember when planning to work in Singapore

1. Plan ahead. Don’t purchase a package tour to Singapore and think that farming out your resumes in a day will get you a high-paying job overnight. It pays that you plan ahead. Write to companies, talk to employment agencies who will assist you in finding legitimate work in the city-state. Better yet, go to the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency and ask where to start.
2. Invest in yourself. Your skills are your most precious possession, improve your skills by taking classes maybe get a master’s degree to up your chances of getting hired. The more skilled you are, the better the chances of getting a more lucrative and stable job.
3. Have your papers in order. Be careful not to fall for recruiters who promise you perks and benefits that are too good to be true. Though the embassy will help in every way they can, their hands are tied if you break the law in Singapore. Thus, make sure you only deal with legitimate headhunters.
4. Using Singapore as a stepping stone to the US is a common strategy but may not exactly be the best way. Know your priorities before you make a move, or pay some fixer to do things for you. It is true that Singapore’s permanent residents can travel to the US without the hassle but you need to be clear on what you really want to  accomplish. Singapore’s salary index is competitive with that of the US plus it’s only 3 hours away by plane.
5. Don’t use your life savings to pay some fixer to get you a job in Singapore. Most of the legitimate employers will pay for your airfare and lodging when you arrive. If you feel you are being overcharged with your application for a job in Singapore, think again and consult with POEA or professionals in the know. In anything you do, it is always best to go legit.

Keep these tips in mind and you will do fine.

going to singapore is not as difficult as you think. there are so many cheap travel packages that include airfare and hotel, for less than 20k pesos. Might I suggest you try looking at the airlines for more info. I’m sure you’ll find something that will suit your budget.

Wow the Ambassador’s Residence is very grand and posh – it’s almost a 180-degree turn when compared to the Philippine Embassy in Singapore.

hi..just a correction, Singapore PR will still require a tourist visa when they plan to go the United States, only Singapore Citizen are visa-free. PRs are not the same as Singapore citizens.

You’re so lucky to have that chance of visiting the Ambassador’s place in Holland Village…too bad, our embassy here in Singapore does not reflect the grandeur that the ambassador is enjoying… We just hope that they further improve the facilities at our embassy which is our heritage here in Singapore. Puro pangagawarta ang ginagawa nila sa mga OFWs dito… sana nga maimbestigahan na rin sila…
