Original or Classic Savory Fried Chicken?

I learned just last night that there are two “schools of thought” as far as SAVORY Chicken is concerned. There’s ORIGINAL SAVORY and there’s CLASSIC SAVORY. A couple of nights ago I ate at the Original Savory at the end of Ortigas Ave going into New Manila. The chicken was very good. Crunchy skin, much like Peking Duck but with uber-succulent meat. The gravy was kinda ordinary, but the chicken itself was wonderful. I could smell the Star Anise throughout the meal and it made the chicken taste even more delicious, because I love the smell of Star Anise. If you don’t know what it is, think Siopao.

I wondered why the prices were kinda different from the one I used to frequent, the CLASSIC SAVORY at the Mall of Asia. The chicken of Original Savory seemed different from Classic Savory because the former is kinda bland. However, the Original Savory chicken seems to be full-flavored, or is this because I had Original Savory very recently and I might have forgotten the taste of Classic Savory? According to the lady I spoke to at the Original Savory, the only difference is the Original Savory are mostly stand-alone stores while the ones inside the malls are Classic Savory. I don’t know if this explanation will fly.

Now, if you’re out there looking for a nice chicken dinner, please do go to Savory and tell me what you think the difference is. I tend to go with the original, but maybe this time I need your opinion too.

Err, di ko din alam eh. hehehe. But thanks to you, I got curious too. Will try to “research” :0)

    Hmmm…

Yung authentic ata yung napuntahan mo sa may new manila. Akshually, sa may Del Monte Ave. corner Banawe, there’s a really really really small Savory, price and taste are also different from the commercial-Savory outlets.

Am not really sure if same company sila, pero yun nga..magkaiba talaga sila ng lasa :)

hahaha, funny thing, i was also thinking about that.. was ginna do a side by side review kaso am not in manila as of the moment

Yeah, according to the crew i talked with while eating in Savory Delmonte cor Banawe, there is no difference.. relatives naman daw lahat ng Savory branches.. i think they only differ with registered names for DTI.. But they are all descendants from the Ting founders of Savory..

  5. Joseph - April 13, 2010

Actually, at first, I also thought that there was no difference between the two branches until did some research.

First, I asked the staff in the Classic Savory branch in Tiendesitas Hypermart if the two were the same and they said that both was owned by the same management.
Then recently, I was able to ask one of the staff in the Original Savory branch in Escolta, the first Savory, and they said that the Classic Savory is entirely different from the Original. I also noticed that the management, menu, and actually, everything was different.

Personally, I prefer the Original Savory. Although Classic Savory is more commercialized nowadays, iba parin talaga yung authenticity ng the Original. They really go way back pre-modern days. That’s why whenever Christmas time is approaching, even if the mall Savorys are more convenient, we still always place our bulk orders in the Original branch.

I’ve eaten both at the old Original and the new Classic Savory branches, and I can’t believe after all these years they still managed to capture the exact taste and quality they had all those years ago. I was recently in Cebu with my family on vacation, we were strolling around the city, and to my surprise we saw a Classic Savory branch! It was located inside Robinson’s Cybergate. Who would’ve known, a brand almost dead a few years ago was now popping up.. and in Cebu even! My eldest son, who is now 25 grew up eating Savory, asked if we could eat there. So we did. we waited about 15 minutes before we got seated. the place was packed! but overall it was a great experience, we ordered their signature classic savory fried chicken, lomi, creamy mushroom fish fillet, salt and pepper squid, lechon macau and lo han chai. Everything was perfect, except for the waiting to be seated part. The food was great! One thing I also noticed was their excellent customer service. I think that is the main difference between the Classic and Original, Classic has a modernized system of customer service, while I can’t say the same thing for the original, as I haven’t visited the original escolta branch since it was too far from my place and a bit unsanitary for my taste. Bottom line is, to say that the Classic Savory is the commercialized version of Original Savory is totally a false assumption. In my opinion, Classic Savory gave a new light for the brand, a “resurrection” if I may. Classic Savory, with their aggressive marketing and expansion has put the brand “Savory” back in the radar for us filipinos as a place to dine, and for that I am grateful. Thank you Classic Savory!

no one can beat the bigger, the better service and more energized classic savory,. CLASSIC SAVORY soon to open at SM tarlac. WOW sarap!

CONGRATULATIONS TO CLASSIC SAVORY FOR THE RECOGNITION’S RECEIVED., AWARDED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM , PHIL. INQUIRER AND UNILEVER PHIL.
AS ONE OF THE BEST CASUAL DINING RESTAURANT IN THE PHILIPPINES SERVING BEST OF THE BESTS PANCIT CANTON noodles..

    wow sarap!

  9. SOLIS - May 5, 2010

I THINK THAT SAYING THAT ORIGINAL VS. CLASSIC IS A WRONG APPROACH.. AFTER ALL, THEY SHARE THE SAME NAME.. FROM WHAT I HEAR FROM MY FRIENDS, THEY BELONG TO ONE TING CLAN. THE RECOGNITIONS RECEIVED BY EITHER CLASSIC OR ORIGINAL ARE RECOGNITIONS BY THE SAME SAVORY CHICKEN.

  10. Robi - May 5, 2010

I totally agree! Savory is both a classic when it comes to its long existence and still original in its unique taste. they should be competing with MAX and ARISTOCRAT and not its own brand. Managers-in-Charge of SAVORY beware!

  11. Arpee - May 5, 2010

it is confusing for us diners to tell which is which, though your ideas are highly valued. as far as the chicken goes, i guess we’re all in agreement that it’s better than its competitors.

  12. bonz - May 5, 2010

well for the classic savory, no competition at all since they’re relatives.. the classic savory were founded by the third generation of Ting family and the original was near relatives and actually the ancestors… there might just some conflict between them since we cannot please others expressing their thought of saying classic or original is either the best.
and one thing more, when classic has a gathering they also invited original savory mgt.

  13. Tin - June 15, 2010

The Original Savory is still the best! Not to be bias because my brother’s wife’s family owns Savory the one in Escolta. But comparing the two Savory’s the Original is still the best one there is. Savory has been a part of my childhood and everyone else’s childhood Ü

To comment on what bonz said.
actually from what i have heard Classic savory has been fighting with the Original Savory since it opened it stores inside malls. Colorum as my Nieces and Nephews put it when they talk about the two Savory’s.

  14. bonz - June 18, 2010

    > with all respect, can i ask ms. tin… if where did she heard, classic savory was fighting the old one…?

well, i don’t think classic savory will be engaged with this accused of ms tin, maybe there’s just a conflict between comments or experienced of regular guests from classic and old savory,.. saying that this one was better or the other one.., or maybe both of savory’s employees.

well, ms tin… saying that old savory is better without any justifying words imminently a biased moves. besides of being related to the owner of escolta tru your brother.

well, CLASSIC SAVORY SM Bicutan is now open to serve you… see you there.

  16. lehk - July 10, 2010

classic savory is the best!! in foods.. but poor in management..sila sila nag papatasan, popromote nung isa dedemote nung isa, ung kalbo puro very good lang alam pero gawa ng crew nya sya daw ang gumagawa!!! si pokwang naman pag type nya ung crew popromote kahit walang alam!! hayyy… kawawa…

Want to know the difference? The sauce. Ask the patrons, it’s one thing Classic Savory can’t imitate from Original
    Savory.

I also noticed Original Savory houses the old-time faves like crispy pata etc while Classic Savory eradicated them already. As far as I have noticed, different managements & owners too.

But for me it’s the sauce talaga. Even my parents says so!

HI. Actually there are three (3), yes, 3 not just two Savory restaurants. Aside from the Original and CLassic, there is the just “Savory” which i have seen along San Juan and a very new branch in Congressional fronting Cherry’s. The manager said they are all owned by the same clan.

I tasted that one and it tastes just about like the Original. My wife likes the Classic coz she says the cooking is bound to be newer or freshly done given that the volume in malls is heavier.

But the one item that they all don’t have, and which i terribly miss, is the Fried Gizzard and Liver dish with pickled radish (labanos ) that our family got used to during your youth (in Escolta)along with the fried chicken.

It seems that the origs or old foods are better, maybe its just the nostalgia.

I hope MA MON LUK revives its fame, since Savory was able to. Chipped plates and grouch waiters excluded.

  24. shishaw - February 28, 2011

iba talaga yung taste ng original and classic savory chicken! pati ang yang chow fried rice nila iba din! i prefer the ORIGINAL!

  25. bonz - March 1, 2011

iba po tlga ung lasa ng yangchow ng classic kasi nga po un po ay class na pang masa, kumbaga sa original eh friedrice na, sa classic savory eh plain rice palng po un..
anyway..try their ABOY’S HOT SEAFOOD SALAD,..masarap po kya, try mo…

  26. raine - January 28, 2012

hmmm.. i prefer the original savory at escolta rather than the classic savory, magkaiba tlga.. chicken and sauce, syempre experience magkaiba din since sa malls yun classic at yun originalay hindi one thing nakakatuwa sa original matanda na yun waiters nila.. ooops meron din near buandia.. hindi sya original at classic .. iba din lasa..

  27. Arpee - January 28, 2012

true that. im getting confused with the savory brand. how many are there and which one is the TRUE and ORIGINAL savory?
