I had my first dinner of 2013 at Tapsi ni Vivian at Bulalohan

The title can be quite a mouthful. Tis true though. On the evening of January 1 I didn’t know where to eat out because I got so tired of eating all the Adobo, spaghetti and ham that I had at home. To enjoy the quiet and empty streets, I decided to get dressed and leave my Makati enclave to grab a bite of recent favorite, tapsilog from Tapsi ni Vivian.

Thanks to my friend Jay for introducing me to this place. Since he brought me here, I’ve been here 3 times now. It is really good, plus it’s cheaper than anything I’ve ever had. Well, forgive the word cheap. Let’s just say, it is affordable. Very affordable.

Best tasting Lechon Kawali

In one of my visits, I tried the Letsilog, or Lechon kawali (deep-fried pork), fried egg and a bowl of fried rice. My goodness, I was so bowled over.


I also tried one of their special dishes, Cream Dory Kilawin.

I loved this dish. Kilawin is the Philippine version of Ceviche, which is raw fish marinated in vinegars, lime, ginger and a host of local chili peppers. The ginger is essential in making sure the dish doesn’t “smell fishy.” So, as you can imagine, they put in a whole lot of grated ginger. And how delicious it turned out to be.

The restaurant has been around since the 1980s, 1984 to be exact. Staff told me, it started out as a small short order kiosk which has now grown into a five-story building where they also host weddings, birthdays and all kinds of celebrations. It is always nice to see a kababayan (compatriot) make it big in this economy.

Seriously, their food is very very good. I urge you to brave the traffic and try their Tapsilog (fried air-dried beef, egg and fried rice).  Go to their Facebook page for more information. By the way, Tapsi ni Vivian is open 24 hours a day.
