Malabon is a town in the Northwestern part of Metro Manila. This city used to be the seat of the Philippine Revolution and is the home to many of our national heroes. Malabon is also home to so many local pastry and food revolutionaries from which the Torres sisters hail. Maricar and Marian are sisters who have inherited their talent for “kakanin” (rice cakes), cassava cakes and jams from their Malabon elders. With their natural talent for good taste, coupled with their adventurous spirit in constantly finding new flavors, what resulted is now the “Taste of Heaven” line of native sweets and pastries.

With SEO specialist Elymar Apao gracing the meet-up, sisters Marian and Maricar shared some of the strategies and secrets behind the wildly successful Taste of Heaven pastries. Interestingly enough, the secrets they shared were no secrets at all. They experimented with new flavors and made sure they used only the freshest of ingredients.

The Taste of Heaven Ube Ensayamada (ensaimada with purple yam filling) is the best ensaymada I have ever tasted. It is heavier than any ensaymada I have ever tried and the ube (purple yam) filling is just bursting from folds. Generously topped with butter and smothered in cheese, the Ube Ensaymada is a steal at only P45.00 (US$0.83) each. I must say it is better than any ensayamada in the Power Plant or Serendra area. This is Maja Mais selling for P100.00 (US$2.00) and is made mostly of cream cheese and whole kernel corn. It’s a melt-in-your-mouth treat!

The turon (banana fritters) that we know is known as Valencia de Malabon. This variety is more than the usual turon. It contains red bean paste, bananas, jackfruit strips and ube jam (purple yam filling) and really heavenly.

Taste of Heaven has several branches. This one is in SM Hypermart, beside Tiendesitas. I suggest you try a bag of the macaroons and instantly you will have an idea what to give as gifts this Christmas. Remember to come early if you intend to buy a box or so. They do not overproduce, thus the good stuff is sold out before the sun goes down. I was witness to how so many people flock to Taste of Heaven for their ensaymada and ube jam fix!
