Saying goodbye to 2011 was easy as pie. That year had been a complete roller coaster ride for me. Sobering up from the highs, lows and rock-bottoms had taken so much of my time and energy. That was mostly the topic of my conversations with my sister when we had New Year’s Eve dinner at Nihonbashitei. Not for any special reason, but this was the only restaurant open for dinner on the evening of Dec 31, 2011, aside for Hai Shin L0u Seafood Restaurant.

It was a good dinner. The service was good, as usual in a Japanese restaurant. Nihonbashitei looks like an 80s restaurant and for no uncertain purpose. When patrons walk into the restaurant, they will immediately notice the 1980s feel and the warm service. The prices are reasonable, perhaps less expensive than the neighboring restaurants along Pasay Road.

Like this really tasty roll from Nihonbashitei, I wish everyone a wonderful New Year, full of hope and good things to come. May 2012 be YOUR year and may you have A LOT on YOUR PLATE this year, a lot of love, happiness and g0od fortune.

The holiday season was the only excuse I had to indulge in all my food favorites. Though Noreen’s mom made me lengua last year, I asked her to make lengua again this year, but in cream with mushrooms and olives. Other favorites include Penne in white sauce (yes, white sauce all throughout) and crispy fried chicken. Not much, you might say? This is a lot for three people. Noreen, myself and my Uncle Rudy.

What is media noche without the usual round fruits to bring good luck for the rest of the year? Not in the picture was the kiat-kiat or Mandarin oranges. They’re my favorite!

Veggies to make sure we eat healthy. Noreen made these fresh spring rolls or Lumpiang Sariwa. Instead of the usual bamboo shoots, Noreen put turnips, greens and a little kamote (sweet potato) for a sweet after taste. Delish!

The penne was al dente as could be. No picture with the sauce. I took this one before he sauce was mixed. I was eating it till the 4th of January and it was still delectable.

For better presentation, Noreen put iced tea in a punch bowl, with slices of lemon.

The ensemble with the crispy fried chicken. Not a bad way to meet the new year.

And the piece de resistance, the ox tongue in mushroom sauce with olives. Despite doctor’s orders that I avoid red meat, I failed miserably in refusing this dish. I said to myself, ‘what the hell, I only have this once a year.’ Then the gout came knocking on my door two days later. Looking back, I mulled, ‘oh hell, the enjoyment of the lengua was well worth the pain.’ Dear reader, do not follow my example. Always follow your doctor.
