I remember hearing about the launch of Pepper Lunch in the Philippines and I asked the people who attended the launch about their feedback. The food bloggers I asked were mostly praises for Pepper Lunch so I decided to try it for myself.

World Bangers Haute Dog on the first day of 2008

1 January, 2008 (16:28) | Uncategorized | By: Arpee

Although we did have so much food at our New Year’s Eve dinner, we decided to check out the Glorietta crowd and see what’s new for 2008. But to my disappointment, the Glorietta was closed on New Year’s day so we decided to visit the Power Plant Mall instead. Thankfully, Rockwell was open though several shops were closed. The theaters were open but since the Metro Manila film festival was still in season, I could not see the movies I liked. So off we went to dine simple.

The common craving for the day was for hotdogs and what better place to eat hotdogs than at the World Bangers Haute Dog. Their “haute” dogs were haute indeed as the French mean high-end or high fashion when they say haute. Not the usual hotdogs from 7-11 or Purefoods fare, World Bangers serves the meanest hotdog meals you will ever have this side of Makati. Their food is slightly more pricey than most, but are well worth it.

They don’t have large shop like KFC or Kenny Rogers at the Power Plant Mall’s Basement level, but they do have a lot chairs outside their kiosk that attracts a fairly loyal crowd. So I thought to myself, if these people kept coming back, why shouldn’t I? And so I did a McArthur and indulged myself anew.

I had this one, the Classic German, a large sausage topped with a blanket of sauerkraut and a generous serving of mustard. Each meal had a glass of soda and your choice of two sidings; I had mac and cheese with German potato salad. The damage for the this plate? P160.00 (US$4.00).

Noreen had this one. So very sorry for forgetting it’s name. I think it was called Caramelo or something. My apologies to World Bangers fans. A large sausage on a fresh bun with blue cheese dressing and some greens. Really delish! Also P160.00 (US$4.00) a plate, with mac and cheese, fries and soda.

Weng had an appetite of a Texan so he had a Texan Chili Dog, with mac and cheese, fries and tall glass of Coke. All for P160.00 (US$4.00) too.

Eden had the more sedate Swiss Mushroom Melt. It’s one of their bestsellers at P150.00 (US$3.65) a plate.

The next time you’re at the Power Plant Mall and you suddenly feel this urge for extraordinary hotdogs, you know where to go.

Happy New Year folks!

My Sumo Sam afternoon

24 November, 2007 (12:22) | events, restaurants | By: Arpee

It was my uncle’s birthday and we decided to dine out to celebrate his 82nd year. At the Power Plant Mall, I decided to bring my Tito Udol to Sumo Sam for his birthday lunch. I’m glad I brought him there as the restaurant gives a free ice cream sundae and a birthday song to diners celebrating their birthday, which is standard to most restaurants.

First, the booboos:

  1. Portions are good for one. Don’t expect large portions per order. Perhaps this is in keeping with the usual Japanese style of food presentation. Nonetheless, the taste more than makes up for it.
  2. It’s slightly pricey for the average employee. Though not a place you can dine at everyday, it is definitely a place you can go to for special occasions. Worry not, your five-hundred-pesos bill (US$11.36) will still buy you a decent meal, or two.

The yahoos:

  1. This is the one place where I have tasted the most incredible sushi ever. Really good. I’d do the human wave by myself if I could.
  2. This is quite contradictory, but the smallness of the portions of some of their menu items is crucial to good food presentation. Note their Spider Roll, it just has to be of the right size to compliment the decorative plate and garnish. The presentation makes it more appetizing. It really worked so well with Sumo Sam. Each dish is truly a work of art.
  3. The service. The kitchen staff are light on their feet to bring you your food without waiting an eternity. I’ve heard other bloggers have a bad experience with Sumo Sam, but I went there anyway and good for me, I was not disappointed.
  4. Before ordering I mentioned that we were celebrating my Tito Udol’s 82nd birthday. After we got the bill and started to step away from the table, Lovely (seems to be the manager) stopped us and said they have a surprise for the celebrator. Tito Udol was so happy with the ice cream sundae and thanked Lovely to no end.

See the pictures and get a feel of the place. I hope you go and visit this restaurant too.
